X-ray Inspection for Metal Cans
Peco InspX offers several X-ray inspection solutions for the full spectrum of metal cans from aluminum beverage cans to #10/gallon food cans. Our machines are reliable for accurately detecting foreign material, fill height, and can maintain integrity at high speeds.
Foreign Material: Leveraging advanced X-ray technology, the Peco InspX ScanTrac detects metal (both ferrous and non-ferrous), glass, stones and dense plastics, ensuring no contaminants reach customers.
Fill Level Detection: By measuring density, Peco InspX X-ray machines precisely calculate fill levels of both solid and liquid products, reducing the need for costly and bulky checkweighers.
High Speed: ScanTrac systems are capable of performing foreign material and fill level inspections at speeds ranging from 1200 cpm for beverage cans to 2000+ cpm for tuna.
Non-Contact: Peco InspX’s inspections are non-contact – installing directly over your existing lines and conveyors, with no hassle, no transfers and no need for expensive modifications that might slow down production.
Quality Manager at Leading Beverage Manufacturer
ScanTrac by Peco InspX inspects the full range of beverage cans sizes – cocktail, slim, bottle cans, 16oz, and even 24oz. All sizes.
Challenges: Beverage Can inspection is uniquely challenging due to ultra-high line speeds (1800+ cans per minute). The high volume of product may result in problems like low or high fill level and foreign material contamination compounding. At these speeds, problems like wasted containers, lost product, and product holds pile up in minutes.
Speeds: Peco InspX is uniquely suited to operate at the highest line speeds – our machines are custom built to operate with the fastest tuna canning lines in the world (2200cpm). There has yet to be a product produced too fast for Peco InspX to inspect.
Foreign Contamination: Ball cages, vent tubes, nuts, bolts and washers periodically fall into open cans before seaming. At ultra-high speeds, tens of thousands of dollars of product can pass through by the time the missing components are identified. Peco InspX X-ray systems easily detect, process, and eject any contaminated products so that costly holds and recalls are no longer a worry.
Fill level and filler valve monitoring: If a filler valve is not operating correctly, under and overfills can quickly accumulate, costing thousands in product expense in just a few hours. Peco InspX -rays can monitor fill level on a can by can basis and associate the results to individual fill heads, allowing for quick maintenance intervention and process improvements.

Challenges: Production of canned food presents complexity driven by multiple fill operations and cans ranging in size. The multiple fills of products like baked beans with bacon or chicken noodle soup, increase the difficulty of fill level measurement, while the variation in can sizes challenge other X-ray providers – but not Peco InspX – to inspect the entirety of each can.
Can Shapes and Sizes: Food cans range in size from small tuna cans to gallon sized #10 cans. Alternative X-ray inspection providers are forced to mask the edges of each can image because the metal of the can limits their ability to differentiate from contaminants. Peco InspX X-ray algorithms establish a continuously improving “learn” of each can’s dimensions based on thousands of samples, enabling our systems to inspect the entirety of the can to find contaminants in every corner and crevice, especially the bottom.
Multi-Fill Cans: Many canned food products require multiple fills of several different ingredients, creating challenges measuring total fill verses the specific fill level of each ingredient. Peco InspX calculates a density-based fill level measurement that allows us to measure the total fill of each ingredient based on differences in density.
Filler/Seamer Management: As with beverage can inspection, Peco InspX X-ray can identify negative trends in fill height and associate them back to the filler valves themselves. Using Peco InspX tools, production management can spot trends in certain seamer heads by catching dented cans and visibly damaged seams.
